Driver’s License

New residents who want to drive in West Virginia must, after establishing residence, apply for a West Virginia Driver’s License within 30 days. If you have a valid out-of-state license, you must pass a vision and knowledge test and surrender your old license before a West Virginia license can be issued. If the out-of-state license is expired, you must follow the same procedures as any first time applicant including a vision test, knowledge test, obtaining an instruction permit, and passing a driving test.

Titling Vehicles

A new resident must title and register all vehicles within 30 days of residency. Vehicles may be titled and registered by submitting a properly completed application, out-of-state title ad fees to the Division of Motor Vehicles. You can obtain an application at the local Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in Sabraton 285-3240.

Students attending WVU may continue to maintain their home state registration if their home state grants the same privilege to West Virginia residents. Persons temporarily employed or conducting business in West Virginia may apply for a dual registration (all related titling and registration fees are required).

Motorcycles require a valid state license, helmet and eye protection. All boats must be registered with the Department of Natural Resources 285-3150.
