Universities/Colleges

Morgantown is home to West Virginia University (www.wvu.edu), the flagship institution of high education in the state. A public land grant institution, founded in 1867, the University’s thirteen colleges and schools offer 170 bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and professional degree programs. WVU is classified as a “Carnegie Research 1 Institution," and as such, is one of the nation’s top research Universities. Students come from all counties in West Virginia, most states in the United States, and 100 other nations. The Student Guide to America’s Best 100 College Buys consistently puts WVU in its top 100 based on academics and low tuition costs.

The University offers a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. Some of the schools include the College of Agriculture and Forestry, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business and Economics, College of Creative Arts, School of Dentistry, College of Engineering, College of Human Resources and Education, School of Journalism, College of Law, School of Medicine, College of Mineral and Energy Resources, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, School of Physical Education, and the School of Social Work.

WVU is the heart of cultural and sports activities in Morgantown. Fans come from all over West Virginia and around the country for the Mountaineer football games in the fall, sometimes exceeding the 60,000 stadium seat capacity. The Mountaineer basketball games are played at the Coliseum which seats around 14,000. The newly renovated Creative Arts Center, seating 1,600, offers both musical and dramatic events, along with galleries exhibiting student work and work from up-and-coming artists. The Core Arboretum has 7 hiking trails with several hundred species of native plants, and is occasionally the site of planned activities. The Shell Indoor Recreation Center and Natatorium are located near the Coliseum. WVU offers a Student Recreation Center as well. The Erickson Alumni Center is located just 400 yards from Milan Puskar Stadium. Finished in 2009, it has multiple meeting rooms, a large banquet hall, a bell tower/carillon system, and outdoor courtyard.

The PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) system that was built by the US Department of Transportation as a national research and demonstration project runs from the downtown campus to the Medical School with several stops along the way.
